Broadcast Reporting

PODCASTING

Journalism is constantly changing, so we are trying to expand broadcasting beyond just video. Even though our school does not have an official Broadcast program at The Emery, we have four podcasts currently. In my sophomore year, I approached our Managing editor, Mishal Charania, to start Minutes of Lit. Within this podcast, I wanted us to share our love of literature and all facets of media. After Mishal had graduated, it wasn't the same to do the podcast alone or with someone else. I had a blast working with her. My favorite part of it was growing and learning from the conversations I had.

Mishal and I recorded a total of four episodes. For our first episode, we talked about Shawn Mendes' album "Wonder." We recorded over a podcast app, Anchor. Besides the fact that we were obsessed with Shawn Mendes, we loved his album and were super passionate about it.

Even though we did sound a bit scripted in the first episode, we got better over time. We wanted to talk about these "hot topics" within student culture.

On the right, you can find all of our episodes for Minutes of Lit. We ended up winning 2nd place for MIPA's podcast series.

We also created outlines for our podcast beforehand. We would write out several talking points, but never an actual script since we wanted people to listen to a conversation. We were able to have fruitful conversations with not just each other, but with the EIC Maya Kogulan (talking about South Asian Representation in media) and our adviser, Sara-Beth Badalamente and English teacher Sheri Horwitz, reviewing rom-com, To All The Boys Always and Forever.

VIDEO PRODUCTION

Editorial Eats is the first video I have edited and shot. Editorial Eats was a new series I came up with. Now that iPhones have good-quality camera's, I shot with it. I wanted a vlogging style to be  established in this video. Looking at the bonds and relationships between the editors, it was something that I needed to document. This is the first episode and once the weather clears, we plan on reviewing more food around Ann Arbor. We made a plan to visit different donut shops. The video was also shot by Design Editor, Annabelle Ye and Sports Editor, Quinn Newhouse.

At the beginning of the video, to achieve the typing effect I also taught myself how to use Keynote to establish that and went through several sounds available through iMovie, to find the perfect sound.  I also teased our video on Instagram to gain more traction. Below are the analytics of the video. I also did not breach any copyright rules, while editing the video.
