The School of New York Times
I was searching for journalism programs to enhance my reporting and writing skills and I stumbled upon "The School of New York Times." I looked at the courses and really thought "Writing the Big City: Reporting in New York." I applied and I go into this pre-college/summer academy program. Dance is a huge part of my life, so, as part of our assignment, I decided to interview a dance teacher and write a personality profile on her and her school, Vivarta. I received extensive, but helpful feedback from my instructors Seth Kugal and Ariel Lown Lewiston. I also learned to not always have paragraphs of one quote. Trimming down the quotes to a healthy dose made my stories become more coherent and concise.
For another assignment, we did a press conference with a New York Times journalist, Kirk Semple. This was one of the more fruitful interviews I've seen when a lot of people are asking questions, as opposed to one person. This conference improved my journalistic ability to ask what questions and when to ask them. Listening is the biggest thing here.
