THE PESSIMIST.

First place feature columnist

My entire life, I have been deemed a pessimist. I always looked at things in a very negative way. After writing "Dear relatives, I am not your stereotype," I decided to start a column called "The Pessimist" last year. There were many issues last year that I discussed from taking notice of the staff absences, and rising COVID-19 cases, to the unhealthy competition persisting at Huron. I just wanted to address those issues, not just in Ann Arbor, but in our world. After all "I am here to talk about how the glass is half-empty and for every optimist, there is a pessimist." Everything came to me. I realized what makes a good columnist is to be very observant and passionate. So the words came naturally. It was very fluid.

Let's go back. Please

In this article, I brought up the issue and talked about how there was an influx of absences and COVID-19 cases. We would have school some days, and other days we wouldn't. This piece was inspired by the "After Effects" piece I wrote. I had a lot of fun writing about how virtual learning would be the simple solution so everyone is safe and school days will not be canceled.

American work Culture is destroying us.

I noticed how no one takes a breather. It's 'go, go, go.' I always knew living here, it felt like hell. Writing this article, I hoped that students, teachers, and administrators would wake up and realize how the work culture is destroying us. I was very passionate about us living in hell. It was difficult for me to draw a line between ranting and sharing an opinion, so people can understand.

Is it just healthy competition?

This piece is an extension of the American work culture. Living in Ann Arbor, when the University of Michigan decisions come out, you can tend to feel it in the air. I wanted to make my peers understand that competition does not necessarily mean we have to demean each other. It was happening. We should share ideas and uplift them. This article was the hardest to write because it hit too close to home. But it needed to be shared. After reading my article my co-eic said, "So glad you talked about this very prevalent issue happening at Huron."
